I recently had a conversation with a man I really respect. He told me that he removes his calves for 48 hours at ~35 days after birth. The theory is that it jump starts the mothers cycle. The only other person that I have met that does this was a Hereford breeder in Texas that had some of the tightest calf crops I’ve come across.
I have not done this but would like some other thoughts on it….
I just posted something about the way I weaned my calves this year and think that I’m becoming a believer in handling cattle calmly and doing my best to eliminate as much stress as possible and the thought of an early removal, even though short, seems like it could open up calves to unneeded stress.
